I’ve been using ChatGPT to learn a new language, and the results were amazing!

What’s my secret? I didn’t use ChatGPT just for grammar questions or homework cheating. I used it to increase my exposure to the language through reading, speaking, listening, and writing practice.

• Reading: In the past, I had to wait until I reached a B1/B2 level to start reading in a foreign language. With ChatGPT, I started reading even as a beginner.

• Writing: I created a super prompt to make ChatGPT correct your text like your teacher would (with strikethroughs and text insertions) while preserving your meaning and voice

• Study mode: This is a feature that helps you use ChatGPT for less homework cheating and more learning that sticks

I also created a space within ChatGPT dedicated to language learning. There, ChatGPT acts as a language tutor and follows any preferences I set. This setup creates a language environment that doesn’t interfere with your other uses for ChatGPT (work, school, etc). In this article,

I’ll use Spanish as the target language, but you can apply everything to any language.

First Things First: Create a Language Project

In this guide, we’ll learn how to make ChatGPT correct our mistakes, speak with the accent we want, and more.

There are different ways to do this:

1. You start a new chat and give the instructions

2. You change ChatGPT’s behavior in Settings → Personalization (it applies to all chats)

3. You change ChatGPT’s behavior within a project (it applies to chats within the project)

Option 1 is very repetitive, and option 2 will mess up other ChatGPT chats.

Option 3 is perfect because we’ll create a space just for learning a language without affecting the rest of our chats.

Here’s how to create a project.

First, on the left sidebar, go to projects and click on “New Projects.“ Give your project a name and then click on “Create project.” I’ll name mine “Language Project“

The best part of a project is that we can change how ChatGPT behaves by default within that project. To do so, click on the three dots (upper-right corner) and select “Edit instructions.”

Reading Sessions with AI

If you like reading and are learning a foreign language, you should try reading with ChatGPT (even if you’re still a beginner).

Here’s how to do it:

First, open ChatGPT and tap on voice mode:

Then say this:

I’m going to read a book in [language] and you have to translate what I say to English

Pick up a book in your target language and follow these steps:

1. Read a paragraph or a bit of dialogue

2. Pause for a moment

3. ChatGPT will provide a translation

And then repeat! While you listen to the translation, follow along carefully with your eyes, trying to memorize new words and expressions.

Why does this work?

• If you’re a beginner, you’ll get used to speaking words in a foreign language quickly (how to pronounce and write them)

• If you have an intermediate or advanced level, after every reading session, you can build a list of new words to improve your vocabulary.

To make this more efficient, paste this into our project’s instructions:

I’m going to read a book in [language] and you have to translate it to English. Whenever I come across a new word, I’ll share it with you and you have to save it, so we can build a vocabulary table later

Notes:

• To avoid confusing ChatGPT with different instructions, you can create one project for speaking and another for reading

• If you have an advanced level, you won’t need ChatGPT to translate everything you say. You can turn on voice mode only when you find a new word. You could also keep it on all the time and if you don’t find new words, just say: “Don’t translate this part. Let’s continue.”

Writing

If you go to language school, you probably have writing tasks once in a while. In case you want to improve your writing skills, you can use ChatGPT to correct your text just like your teacher would: with strikethroughs and text insertions. That’s a good way to improve our writing because we learn from our mistakes.

Here’s a prompt I use to improve my writing (works best in Claude, which is another AI tool).

Context: I’m a non-native [your language] speaker writing [emails/stories/essays] in [target language]

Task: Lightly edit while preserving my meaning and voice

The text to proofread is in the Word file attached

Instructions:

1. Fix grammar, spelling, punctuation, and awkward phrasing

2. Punctuation preferences: Replace em-dashes (“—”) and semicolon (“;”) with a dot (”.”) to start a new sentence, or a comma (”,”) to continue the sentence.

3. Word choice: Replace uncommon/odd words with common phrasing; add idiomatic expressions only when they improve clarity and tone

4. Conciseness: Remove redundancy and tighten long sentences without losing nuance. Prefer simple words over fancy ones

5. Tone & voice: Keep my intent and personality. Do not introduce new facts or change claims

6. Numbers & units: Use symbols instead of words. For example, don’t say 45 percent, say 45%

7. Do not: add content I didn’t write, invent citations, or change factual claims.

Output format:

A) Clean copy (final, ready to publish).
B) Change log with bullets explaining notable edits (rewordings, deletions, tone shifts)
C) Diffs: Show a diff with deletions (strikethrough) and bold insertions. They should be in red

The input is a Word file with the original text (you could simply copy and paste your text), and the outputs are three files. The diffs file is the most important because it has the corrections.

ChatGPT Study Mode: Less homework cheating, more learning that lasts

If we don’t use AI properly, it can weaken our critical thinking. When using AI for learning a subject, avoid:

• Turning every question into “give me the answer” (ask for hints instead)

• Copy-pasting answers without understanding them

By default, ChatGPT provides answers to your language questions. However, if you turn on “study mode,” ChatGPT will offer step-by-step guidance for solving your exercises instead of quick answers.

Say you have these Spanish exercises:

Once study mode is enabled, even if you ask ChatGPT to solve your language exercises, it won’t give you quick answers, but step-by-step guidance for solving your exercises.

Note: When giving answers in a foreign language, sometimes ChatGPT replies in that language. To make sure it’ll always reply in English, add the instructions “always reply in English “ either to the first prompt or the project’s instructions

The days when you had to look up words in the dictionary, manually build a database of new words, and retain new vocabulary using flashcards are long gone (at least for me).

Over the past months, I’ve been using ChatGPT to increase my vocabulary. In the beginning, it quickly provided what every online dictionary out there provides nowadays, but little by little I developed a prompt that helped me stop using the dictionary and flashcards.

In this article, I show you step by step how to create a super prompt that:

• Provides the definition of the word, examples, and meaning in the given context

• Presents word families (to learn multiple words instead of 1)

• Automatically builds a database of new words learned

• Creates a story using all the new vocabulary

You’ll not only learn how I used ChatGPT to improve my vocabulary but also how I created these prompts.

Part 1: Turning ChatGPT into an online dictionary

The first part of the prompt has a very simple goal — learn the meaning of the word with examples and understand it in the given context. To obtain this, you need to provide the word and copy/paste the sentence where you found that word.

Act as a language tutor. I’m going to give you new words I’m learning to increase my vocabulary. For each new word, I’ll give you context. You have to write the meaning of the word, provide 3 examples of how to use the word and explain the meaning of the word in the given context.

Here’s what you get with this first part of the prompt.

So far ChatGPT hasn’t provided anything that our old dictionary can’t.

In part 2, we’ll take this prompt to the next level.

Part 2: Creating a database of new words with ChatGPT

In the past, I used to manually build my personal database of new words in Notion. Now ChatGPT does all this for me.

Every time ChatGPT gives us the meaning of a new word, it’ll also add the new word to a table where we can keep track of all the words we’ve learned.

Here’s the second part of the prompt:

Only when I type the words “Table Time” you have to build the table below.

Column 0 (Word): New word
Column 1 (Type): Classify the word as a verb, noun, idiom, phrasal verb, etc based on the sentence I gave
Column 2 (Meaning): Write the meaning of the word
Column 3, 4, 5 (Example 1, 2 and 3): examples of how to use that new word
Column 6 (Family): Provide the word family

Every day I’ll give you new words. You have to update the table every time I give you a new word.

Here’s the table I got after adding some new words.

Although it’s not visible, the last column contains the word families. In that way, we can learn multiple words (e.g., rigorous, rigor, rigorously)

Part 3: Learning all the new words by reading a small story

Research has shown that we can increase our vocabulary through repetition. If you learn a new word, but never use it or hear it again, you’ll end up forgetting it. In contrast, if you hear it on TV, and find it in an article a good number of times, you might use that new word the next time you need it.

That’s why, the goal of the last part of the prompt is to make ChatGPT create a story with all the words that were added to our table.

Here’s the last part of the prompt:

Finally, when I tell you “Story Time” you have to create a small story using all the new words you added to the table.

Remember that below each response, there’s the “Read Aloud“ button 📣 that you can use every time you want ChatGPT to read your story (this helps a lot in vocabulary acquisition!).

Here’s the complete prompt:

Listening

Every time ChatGPT responds, you can have it read aloud. Just click on the three dots and select “Read aloud.”

To practice my listening, I make ChatGPT read aloud the stories it generated for me.

Note: In settings, you can change the speech language: Settings → Voice → Choose a voice. I noted that all the voices in Spanish speak with an accent from Spain (unlike English, where most voices have an American accent, except for “Vale“ which has a British accent

ChatGPT is disrupting language learning.

It now has a voice mode that lets us practice speaking and listening any time we want.

How to practice your speaking skills with ChatGPT

Open the ChatGPT app and tap on the buttons below to start voice mode.

Note: The latest ChatGPT update has changed Voice Mode’s look. To change to the old look (as in the article images), go to Settings → Turn on “Separate mode.“ Also, make sure to turn on “Background conversations“ to talk with ChatGPT even when your phone’s screen is off.

When Voice Mode is on, you’ll see a blue circle in the center and several buttons. Here’s what each one does:

• Blue circle: After a few seconds of silence, ChatGPT replies automatically.
  Press and hold the blue circle to speak without interruptions (release when you’re done talking)

• CC: The CC button turns on captions. Highly recommended for language learners who have problems understanding the pronunciation of words

• Camera: The camera button enables video call mode. In this mode, ChatGPT can see whatever you show through the camera, which enriches the conversation

• Mic: Tap the mic button to mute or unmute your device’s microphone. Use it when you don’t want ChatGPT to hear you or any sounds around you

• X: Tap it to end the conversation

You can start the conversation with ChatGPT with a simple “hi.“ However, in the next sections, I’ll share prompts that will help turn ChatGPT into a language teacher that gives feedback. I’ll split the prompts by levels.

Prompt for beginners

If you’re a beginner, you probably can’t hold a conversation in the language you’re learning. Just say the prompt below at the beginning of the conversation.

I’m learning [target language] and I want to practice it.

Let’s talk about [topic]. In every response, provide your opinion and then ask me a question. Provide responses in 2 languages: [target language] and English

After saying those words, wait for ChatGPT's response and then start speaking in a foreign language. Here’s a test I did in Portuguese.

Here’s part of what I said in the audio and the response I got (press CC to turn on captions)

The first time I heard this AI voice, I couldn’t believe how natural it sounded. It’s mind-blowing. I’ve been using Siri and other voice assistants for a long time, but I think that the way ChatGPT speaks is on another level

Besides ChatGPT, there’s a new app powered by Gemini that focuses on speaking practice. It’s similar to Voice Mode, but with preconfigured themes. You can get speaking practice on some topics and get instant feedback

The app is a bit basic and limited, though. For speaking practice, ChatGPT Voice Mode provides a richer experience

Prompt for intermediate and advanced learners

The prompt below ensures that ChatGPT always keeps the conversation going in your target language. It’ll also correct your mistakes

You’re a [language] teacher. Correct any grammar mistakes I make in [language]

Let’s talk about [topic] in [language]. In every response, provide your opinion and then ask me a question

Here’s a test I did in Spanish.

In the audio, I said on purpose “el pasto carbonara“ to get grammar feedback.

When you finish the conversation, there’s a transcript available. That said, keep in mind that sometimes part of the transcript isn’t available.

Feel free to speak as much as you like!

Advanced: Adding the prompts to custom instructions

If you want to avoid repeating the prompt instructions every time you start a conversation with ChatGPT, create a project and use custom instructions.

Here’s how to create a project.

First, on the left sidebar, go to projects and click on “New Projects.“ Give your project a name and then click on “Create project.” I’ll name mine “Language Project“

The best part of a project is that we can change how ChatGPT behaves by default within that project using custom instructions. To do so, click on the three dots → edit instructions → paste instructions below

You’re a [language] teacher. Correct any grammar mistakes I make in [language]

The magic of the project’s instructions is that you don’t have to repeat them. It seems unnecessary when the instructions are simple, but it becomes powerful as you add more, so feel free to add any other details you want.

To have speaking practice with ChatGPT, start voice mode. Now you can start the conversation by saying this:

Let’s talk about [topic] in [language]. In every response, provide your opinion and then ask me a question

As you can see, we don’t have to mention what’s in the project’s instructions again

You can add whatever you want in the project’s instructions. For example, you can make ChatGPT speak with a specific accent by adding this to the project’s instructions:

You speak Spanish with a heavy accent from [country]
