Guest Post: ChatGPT Reimagines 7 Game of Thrones Characters with Midjourney
I used ChaGPT to create detailed descriptions of Game of Thrones characters and Midjourney to bring them to life.
Hi guys!
Besides my articles here on Substack, every week I’ll share with you the best work from some of my fellow Substack writers. This week Diana is sharing with us an experiment she did with ChatGPT and Midjourney. She’s really into AI art, so check out her Substack: AI Girl.
I used AI to bring Game of Thrones book characters to life.
I used ChatGPT to generate a detailed description of characters like Jon Snow, Daenerys Targaryen, and Jaime Lannister and then I gave those descriptions to Midjourney to see what they would look like in real life and how different they are from the HBO actors.
Here’s what I got.
Jon Snow
In the first book “A Game of Thrones” Jon is 14 years old, but I added him 4 years, so we can compare it with the actor, Kit Harington.
a slender 18-year-old boy with long face, dark hair, and grey eyes. he wears an armor, black wool tunic, black trousers, black boots, a black cloak
This Jon Snow isn’t as good-looking as Kit Harington, but it has Jon’s facial features from the book. Also, the clothes are all black as suggested by ChatGPT.
A really good job by ChatGPT and Midjourney.
Daenerys Targaryen
Generating images for Daenerys with Midjourney was fun since she’s described in more detail than other characters.
a young woman with striking and unusual features. she has silver-gold hair, purple eyes, and pale skin. she wears long flowing dresses, often made of silk, that accentuates her graceful movements. These clothes are adorned with pearls, rubies, and other precious gems.
I really like this image of Daenerys, but I wish Midjourney wouldn’t have mixed her silver-gold hair with the purple color.
Overall the image is good though. The pale skin, clothes, and gems follow the description of Daenerys in the book.
Jaime Lannister
I had some trouble generating the image of Jaime Lannister. In the book, he’s described as a man with a “smile that cut like a knife.” This led to the image below.
a tall man with golden hair, flashing green eyes and a smile that cut like a knife. he is a handsome and charismatic man with a chiseled physique. He wore crimson silk, high black boots, a black satin cloak
A very peculiar smile. Reminds me a bit of the actor who played Jaqen H’ghar, the faceless man.
After omitting the “smile that cut like a knife” from the description I got a better Jaime Lannister, in my opinion.
Overall, good job. The facial features, hair color, and clothes are as suggested by the book.
Ned Stark
a tall, lean man with a stern and serious demeanor. He is noted to have long brown hair. He has a neatly trimmed beard, and grey eyes. he wears heavy brown fur-lined cloak, leather boots, and simple clothing made of sturdy materials like wool or linen
For me, Sean Bean will always be Ned Stark, Lord of Winterfell. That said, this picture isn’t bad.
The clothes make him look like a Game of Thrones character, while the hair and eyes are OK. I just wish I had added the age of Ned in the prompt. This Ned looks too young.
Arya Stark
a girl with a tomboyish appearance, a sharp, expressive face with a long thin nose, grey eyes, and short hair. she wears tunics, breeches, and boots, often made of rough-spun wool or leather.
I wish I could’ve generated an image of a girl with a “tomboyish appearance” but none of the images generated by Midjourney convinced me.
I don’t think the actress who played Arya had a tomboyish appearance, so I think our image isn’t a bad Arya Stark.
Tywin Lannister
a big bald man, broad in the shoulders and well past fifty. He had a flat stomach and strong, capable hands, and his hair was a pale blond, well brushed, but growing thin in spots. He wore it longer than was fashionable, tied back behind his head. he wears fine clothes
Although the initial description of Tywin Lannister didn’t mention anything about him going bald, I added that on the prompt and the results weren’t bad.
I should’ve added more details in the clothing though, so it looks more like a Lannister.
Tyrion Lannister
The Tyrion Lannister from the HBO show is very different from the book description, so don’t have high expectations of this image.
a dwarf that has mismatched eyes and a head that is slightly too large for his body. He also has a prominent forehead, a bushy beard, and hair that is described as “ash blond”. he wears rich fabrics like silk and velvet, and his outfits are often adorned with gold and other precious metals
I didn’t like this one in particular, but after trying different prompts, this was the best I got.

The one of ‘Tyrian’ is probably the most difficult one you tried, to be fair to you. I think the pictures you created, with the prompts you used are pretty good, D. As I read the prompts, it felt like you’d held back, a bit, and maybe could have gone into even more detail; but I love the fact you kept it ‘so’ limited, it was more interesting to see. It’s like, I don’t know, erm... no matter what a human being looks like, you (or anyone else doing this) can use a set of ‘basic descriptive’ commands, and get ‘quite’ near to what ‘anyone’ looks like. Do you get what I’m saying? AI is so impressive at this, and as people get better at prompts, it’ll require less and less information to get to what they want.
I absolutely admire the articles you bring to the party! Every single article not only has something truly interesting, but also, you introduce quirks, technicalities, artistic intricacies etc. I look forward to when you start bringing out courses and instructional stuff on these topics. You really do have a talent for this stuff. Thank you again.
